    The 'serpent on a stick' Medical symbol originated from the Old Testament when the Israelites were plagued with poisonous snakes. Moses stuck a staff in the ground with a gold snake on it and whoever looked at it/touched it was healed. The Greeks later adopted it as a symbol.
